VICTORY FOR STEVE HOLCOMBE AT ENDUROGP OF SPAIN

Team Beta Factory rider Steve Holcombe has continued his positive start to the 2018 FIM EnduroGP World Championship by claiming overall victory on day two of the GP of Spain. Headed for the win on day one, Steve joined the long list of riders who ran into troubles due to the severely wet conditions. Sucking water into his engine, Steve lost more than one-minute but battled his way back to a creditable sixth overall.

With five special test wins on each day, Steve very much had the speed for a double overall class win. Sixth on day one, day two saw the defending EnduroGP World Champion start cautiously before he hit his stride and opened up what would become a comfortable winning margin. Steve topped day two by 28 seconds.

With two rounds of the 2018 FIM EnduroGP World Championship now complete Steve leads the Enduro 3 class by 12 points and sits second in the overall EnduroGP category. Round three sees the series move to Castelo Branco, Portugal on May 5/6.

Steve Holcombe: “I’d say it’s certainly been a tough weekend, a little frustrating with what happened on day one, but overall I’m very pleased. In conditions like we’ve had here in Spain it’s so easy to take a little water into the engine – we race dirt bikes, not jet skis! It was just unfortunate because I felt good and was focused on getting the overall win on day one. Being one of the first riders onto the special tests on day two made it difficult for me – there’d been so much rain over night that I just had to be really careful. It was easy to make a mistake and it was easy to get water into the engine. For the first lap and a half I took things steadily, not pushing too much. I was a little behind at that stage and decided to go for it a little more. I felt really good in the conditions and had a good second enduro test. I managed to work my way into the lead and felt good and kept pushing. Wanting to make up for the disappointment of the first day was definitely a motivating factor. Knowing that a double win was certainly on the cards is a little frustrating, but I’m very happy with my riding. It’s been a great effort from everyone in the team. I’m looking forward to the GP of Portugal now, this coming weekend.”
