“Brad Freeman did a demolition job on all of the riders at WOR Events open Hare Scramble meeting last Sunday at the Clubs “proper” welsh enduro venue, Tyn Twyll near Wrexham, North Wales.Riding a brand-new Beta 2t and looking simply World class, the likeable 21 year old from Rugeley was in unstoppable form as he lapped every single rider on the course, some of them many times as the World Enduro starlet seemed to effortlessly glide over this notoriously tough venue, so tough that it’s the home of the WOR Tough 100, recently just won by David Knight. Freeman looked very impressive indeed as he completed 14 laps, taking the lead of the race from the second lap from Husqvarna mounted, Owain Humphreys. Humphreys is no slouch and most days can be credited with the win or near to it, Owain still comfortably took the runner up spot on this occasion but was passed by the leader for a clear lap on the last lap of the 2.5hr race. 52-year-old Enduro legend, Ady Smith is simply a one off, this guy is a multy time British Enduro champion and has achieved so much on a motorcycle throughout his illustrious career that you would think he would be taking it easy nowadays, Not the case at all though even on his day off he was out there racing as he kept strong, smooth and always fast to keep the two top young guns in his sights and secure a podium finish in third place on his KTM.
Gas Gas Boss John Shirt Jnr is another big and fast name from the past and his recent resurgence in racing has come about because of the superb new Gas Gas 300 that he is importing. Its brought Jnr out of retirement and got him entering all sorts of events recently from the WOR Time card Enduro, the last BEC and now a week later the WOR open Scramble. 3 weeks running, not bad for an old one as he says. Shirty won the over 40’s finished 8th overall and held off the challenges from David Williams and Nigel Lynn in 2nd and 3rd place respectively in class.
Husqvarna 350 Mounted Raife Mcdonald was in superb form as he took a well-deserved win in the Clubman class and a superb 9th overall. Raife finished 28 seconds ahead of Runner Up, Richard Wozencraft (KTM) and 3 minutes, 11 seconds ahead of 3rd placed Elgan Williams(GasGas), all three on 11 laps.
Archie Collier at 15 years of age is getting better by the ride and with his Sportsman class win and a simply fantastic 13th Overall this young 125 Husky rider is one to keep an eye on indeed. Really enjoying the tougher conditions that this venue offers it was a 4 minute advantage that Collier took over eventual Runner Up, Steve Farthing. Farthing in turn passing 3rd placed Andy Rich after chasing him down later in the race. All 3 did 10 laps each.
Ian Heyworth rode splendid in the Over 50’s to secure the win from Runner Up, Gareth “Rhug” Jones by just 32 seconds after an epic 2.5hrs racing but even closer was Lee Sephton missing out to Jones by just 3 seconds. Very close indeed. All 3 on 9 laps each.
The Novice group was topped by Adam Bates showing his latest bit of fitness training is working as he gained a very comfortable 10-minute lead over Runner Up, Jake Sheppard. Both these two completing 9 laps each…and 3rd placed Steve Jones on 8 laps.
It was a superb enduro meeting and went as anticipated with being a WOR event, plenty of help and experience around the track for the riders and a brilliant course to challenge them too, results out instantly and a podium presentation within 5 minutes of the track closing. Considering this event was a last minute, non championship, fun race it certainly didn’t seem like that on the start line with the big guns taking part. Another momentous event by WOR.
As always WOR would like to thank the staff, caterers, medics, sponsors but most importantly the riders for supporting this event and all the others and making it possible to keep putting these events on. WOR have a busy August still to play for and a very busy September too before all attentions turn October onwards to the winter months and the Extreme specials, TOLB, Sucker Punch, Team Extreme, and the new Sandblaster Beach race, more details can be found at www.worevents.com “
